Sberbank employees have uncovered a new telephone fraud scheme in which criminals pretend to be employees of the Central Bank of the victim, the Sberbank press service reported.

A fictitious Central Bank employee told the victim that he had been given three loans from different banks. To solve the problem, the victim was offered to take loans in the amount of 3 million rubles and transfer them to the fraudsters’ account.

The victim was then called again and offered a job at the Central Bank “to help fight fraudsters”. The criminals paid the “employee” for travel, accommodation and taxi expenses on “business trips.”

The victim of the scam came to the home of other victims, pretending to be a Central Bank employee, and persuaded them to transfer money to a “secure” account.

“In addition to robbing their victim without him even realizing it, the fraudsters also managed to recruit him to commit new crimes under the guise of working for the Central Bank of Russia. Fortunately, we managed to quickly stop this criminal chain,” said Stanislav Kuznetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sberbank.

He added that information about loans allegedly granted to a person can be easily verified by calling Sber’s number or contacting a bank branch.
