The number of trips across China during Chinese New Year celebrations could reach a record 9 billion in 2024, writes CNN.
The newspaper states that for many Chinese, this year means a return to normal travel for the first time since the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic. In 2023, the celebration took place just weeks after strict anti-Covid measures were lifted, but coincided with a wave of infections across the country that made travel difficult. As a result, the number of trips was only 4.7 billion.
In China, Lunar New Year is called Spring Festival (Chunjie). Traditionally, during the holidays, workers leave major cities and return to their homes in small cities, towns, and rural areas across the country to welcome the New Year with family and friends.
In 2024, Lunar New Year falls on February 10. The celebration will last until February 24.
