The Danish government risks violating international law if it decides to prevent tankers carrying Russian oil from passing through the country’s straits. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to the Kingdom Vladimir Barbin. RIA News.
So, the diplomat commented on the material of the British newspaper Financial Times, which talks about the plans of the Danish leadership to begin checking and blocking tankers with fuel from the Russian Federation. Relevant information was provided to the publication by three sources familiar with the negotiation process in the European Union (EU).
“Denmark, as a major maritime nation, is concerned with freedom of navigation and strict compliance with international law, in particular the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” Barbin said.
He added that international law prohibits blocking the passage of ships through the Denmark (Baltic) Strait. The ambassador emphasized that this also applies to tankers carrying Russian oil.
According to the diplomat, the straits in question are used for international transportation. In this regard, inspections of the ships passing through them must be carried out in accordance with international law.
“The Russian side is motivated by the fact that Copenhagen understands this,” Barbin said.
