They plan to build Russia’s first tourist complex for domestic and foreign tourists in the Arctic by the end of 2026, on a complex rocky terrain overlooking the Barents Sea. Investments in the project will be approximately 2 billion rubles. Alexander Shmakov, vice president of the VIRIDIAN investment holding, which includes the Yagel Village company, told socialbites.ca.
He explained that the aim of the project is to develop the tourism potential of the Arctic. According to Shmakov, the Arctic needs to become a new all-season holiday destination, and the region has everything needed for this.
“Domestic tourism has increased exponentially recently. This figure will continue to increase. The Kola Peninsula and Teriberka became popular after the movie “Leviathan”. The Arctic attracts attention for many reasons: the Northern Lights, whales, abundance of seafood, fishing. We also expect international tourism in the Arctic to actively develop due to the influx of citizens from Asia, in particular, the BRICS (Brazil, India, China and the Republic of South Africa, with which Russia has signed a visa-free agreement). Middle East. “We expect an exponential increase in domestic and foreign tourism in the future,” Shmakov emphasized.
He explained that the Arctic has advantages in all seasons. For example, in winter the Northern Lights can be seen two to three times a week.
“To understand the North Pole, you need to go there at least four times. The first time I went there was in 1998, when I was 10, and I’ve been there more than 30 times since then. The Arctic leaves no one indifferent. “I believe in the North Pole,” said Shmakov.
He added that today there are logistical problems to be solved by the company’s tourism project in the region. According to the interlocutor, the development project in the village of Lodeynoye (new part of Teriberka) combines a 120-room hotel and a tourist center. The area of the site is 9 hectares and the construction area is 5 thousand square meters.
Shmakov explained that within the framework of the tourist center, there will be a food market with traditional cuisine made from local products, as well as a large and unique thermal complex offering the opportunity to dive in the Barents Sea and the first whale museum in Russia. Within the framework of the Arctic Forum, the company signed a cooperation agreement with the whales of the Defense Museum. There will be a restaurant on site offering local cuisine with a modern interpretation for all visitors to the centre.
The Arctic is adjacent to the North Pole and includes the edges of the Eurasian and North American continents, almost the entire Arctic Ocean with islands (except for the coastal islands of Norway), as well as adjacent parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
