By publication PolicyTwo European diplomats have reviewed the budget increase plan of European Union countries for the 2024-2027 period and expressed their desire to reduce it by 13 billion euros. The other day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed revising the EU’s multi-annual budget and increasing it by 66 billion euros, including aid to Ukraine, migration and refugee programs, as well as strengthening the union’s competitiveness.
It is proposed to allocate 50 billion euros in the form of grants and loans to financially support Ukraine over the next four years. However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called this proposal meaningless, pointing to uncertainty in the use of funds previously allocated to Kiev.
Politico notes that some countries in Eastern and Northern Europe, including Germany, want the European Commission to finance its goals by redistributing funds from the current budget adopted in 2021.
One of the publication’s sources reports that the majority of EU member states agree that certain spending items should be excluded from the proposed budget increase.
