Secretary of the Security Council of Abkhazia Sergei Shamba said: RIA NewsHe said that the republic does not expect to receive an international code for Sukhumi airport, but hopes for flights by Russian airlines.
Shamba noted that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is under the influence of Western powers and the hope that it can give Sukhumi airport an international code in the near future is unlikely.
“Therefore, we hope that Russian airlines will operate flights, and at this stage this is quite enough,” said the secretary of the Security Council of Abkhazia.

Sukhumi airport was built in the 1960s. It is located 18 kilometers from the city. Before it closed in 1993, the airport received up to 5,000 passengers a day during peak season.
