Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant (UAZ) will release the long-awaited updated version of the Patriot in November 2025, the manufacturer’s press service told socialbites.ca. The redesigned car will indeed receive a number of significant changes, including a new power unit.
“We plan to introduce an updated version of our flagship model at the end of next year.
“The main innovation of the SUV will be the power unit consisting of a diesel engine and a 6-speed manual transmission.”
– They told socialbites.ca on UAZ.
Additionally, the Patriot will undergo some aesthetic changes that will affect the optics and interior design. The company promised to announce the characteristics of the engine and the cost of the model “at some point in the future.”

It is assumed that the diesel engine that Patriot will receive is a derivative of the 2-liter engine of the Sollers Argo commercial vehicle. The engine power of the updated SUV model will be 136 hp, clarified “RG”.
What to expect?
Maxim Kadakov, auto expert and editor-in-chief of Za Rulem magazine, said that the scope of future updates to the Patriot depends on time and financial capabilities.
“They have previously tried to install diesel engines on UAZs, but with varying degrees of success.
“And now there is a real possibility that the Chinese 2-liter JAC engine, which is gradually being localized in Yelabuga, will be installed in the company’s vehicles, especially the Patriot,” he said.

Kadakov added that the updated model will also receive a manual transmission from JAC. It is currently produced from Chinese components at the Zavolzhsky Engine Plant (ZMZ). Kadakov also expects the emergence of a new transfer case with electronic-mechanical control.
“In the next update, almost the entire power unit and part of the transmission will be updated.
This is serious news for any SUV, and even more so for UAZ.
Because the models had problems both with the engine (lack of traction in some modes) and with the available manual transmissions,” explained the auto expert.

Exterior changes include new LED headlights and taillights. Inside the cabin, the trim of the front panel and the central tunnel will be updated. Kadakov says there will also be a new three-spoke steering wheel.
“Will UAZ Patriot turn into another car with innovations? NO. Will the updates give it new consumer features? Yes,” stressed the editor-in-chief of “Behind the Wheel.”
Kadakov explained that the diesel version of the Patriot will be preferred for some buyers. But UAZ will not remove the gasoline model from the assembly line, which will probably also receive external changes. The circle of potential buyers should increase due to the expansion of the range of modifications, the expert says.
What are the challenges?
The fate of the updated version of the Patriot largely depends on how successfully the new power unit can be adapted, said Sergei Tsyganov, author of the Russian Automobile Telegram channel, in an interview with socialbites.ca.
“There are no specific operational complaints regarding JAC engines.
They, like any Chinese engine, are of average quality: they do not break down often, but they are not very reliable either.
It all depends on the layout problems in the engine, which affects the ease of use. They once tried to put a Ford engine in the Patriot, but it didn’t fit and the side members had to be redrawn. This was no longer economically feasible,” the expert recalled.

UAZ
At the same time, Tsyganov believes that if it were not for the special economic situation in Russia, which causes high demand even for old cars, UAZ cars would have long lost interest from customers.
“In other market conditions, the Patriot would have been in the dustbin of history for a long time and no one would remember it,” he believes.
How much will it cost
People interviewed by Gazeta. Ru” experts agreed that the price tag of the updated “Patriot” will be rewritten.
“Of course the diesel version will be much more expensive.
This will add about 10-12% to the cost. No less.
The localization of the power unit here is not for the sake of economic feasibility, but for the sake of localization itself. UAZ has a lot of work ahead, and this will definitely affect the final cost,” summarized Sergei Tsyganov of Russian Automobile.
