In most cases, the failure of a car to start is due to problems with the starter, and you can determine them yourself. Artem Berezin, head of the training department of the Avtopribor auto parts company, told this to the socialbites.ca correspondent.
“If you hear a clicking sound when you turn the ignition key but the engine doesn’t start, this could indicate a faulty commutator, brushes or short circuit. If there is no noise from the starter motor at all, it is most likely a faulty solenoid relay or armature. A possible explanation in this scenario could be a short circuit or a simple problem with the contacts in the circuit,” he said.
Berezin added that in a situation where the starter motor works but is turned off before the engine starts, the causes may be a breakdown of the solenoid relay, wear of mechanical parts or oxidation of the power supply terminals.
There are also cases when a metallic grinding sound is heard when the starter is working. As a rule, problems with the engagement of mechanical elements are to blame. In such a case, Berezin advised to look at the Bendix clips. If the driven bearing rotates easily in both directions, this means that the bendix is worn out and needs to be replaced. However, in some cases, the part may be in good working order, but very dirty.
According to the expert, if the starter does not turn off even after starting the engine, you should pay attention to the relay contacts – there is a possibility that they are stuck. He added that almost all of the mentioned malfunctions do not require replacement of the entire starter. It will be enough to replace individual elements.
