In the context of the recently completed St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the head of KAMAZ, Sergey Kogogin, outlined the role that a truck driver plays in the fate of the revival of the Moskvich brand. Recall that earlier KAMAZ support for the launch of new products at the former Renault plant Russia (now the Moskvich plant) was announced at the level of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, but now there are details.
We, using our international experience and turnkey contacts, are ready, if conditions for the passenger car industry do not change, to select a partner and set up production of up to 300 thousand cars per year in current facilities in Moscow,” TASS quotes Sergey Kogogin.
It is worth noting that the capacity of Renault Russia in the last months of operation was about 190,000 cars per year, that is, we are talking about a significant increase in volumes. It can be assumed that “turnkey contacts” means the Chinese company JAC, with which KAMAZ is collaborating on the medium-duty Compass truck – the Chelny truck uses a cab licensed by a Chinese manufacturer.
AZLK’s main products were once road cars. There is such a model in the current Russian JAC line – this is the J7 Liftback introduced last year
In addition, Kogogin clarified that KAMAZ does not intend to produce its own passenger cars – with the exception of Kama electric vehicles – so that the future of the Moskvich plant is hardly directly related to KAMAZ’s strategy. Recall that earlier the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov reported that work is underway to launch a new line of cars at the Moskvich plant, with Chinese partners, but did not specify the names of the companies.
- Manturov later clarified that cars under the Moskvich brand will be produced in several versions, including hybrid and electric.
- “Driving” can now be viewed on RuTube.
