As a result of the conference in Wilhelmshaven, the authorities explained their position stemming from the need to save energy due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The resolution passed at the end of the conference says the speed limit can be “an inexpensive, quickly implemented and immediately effective measure”.
“We must also promote climate protection through speed limits,” said Olaf Lies, Minister for the Environment of Lower Saxony, the conference chair.
The specific figure that should fix the maximum allowable speed on German roads has yet to be announced. Currently, speed limits on German autobahns are only imposed on some sections, there are no general restrictions.
