‘Third’ Range Rover Sport: new design and platform and plug-in powertrain

As is typical for the British brand, the designers managed to interpret the old style in a modern way, so as not to break the bond with its predecessor. The upper grille of the new Range Rover Sport has been narrowed slightly, the apron now has a double opening framed by air intakes in the wheels. Door handles are now retractable, the shape of the taillights has changed.

Visually, the Range Rover Sport came close to the flagship Range Rover, especially when viewed from the front. Following on from the “senior”, the novelty moved on to the MLA-Flex modular platform (flexible modular longitudinal architecture), which is said to be 35% stiffer than its predecessor.

The car is equipped with Dynamic Air Suspension air suspension as standard, the setting is automatically adapted to the traffic situation. Navigation system data is also used for this.

Also new on board is the four-wheel steering, which allows the rear wheels to turn up to 7.3 degrees. This can reduce the turning radius at low speeds.

The new Range Rover Sport is offered with three-litre diesel and petrol engines as part of a plug-in hybrid. All PHEVs have a 38.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with an electric range of up to 77 km – more than fully electric cars could offer not so long ago.

The top engine is a 530 hp biturbo V8. with a working volume of 4.4 liters. An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is standard on all modifications.

In terms of all-wheel drive technology, Land Rover has taken a gamble on further developing the iAWD system – instead of permanent all-wheel drive, there is now a transmission with a multi-disc clutch for connecting the front axle.

The interior of the Range Rover Sport has a sleek, elegant design reminiscent of the large Range Rover, but with a slightly different layout.

The start date of sales has not yet been announced, but the prices are already known – in the US the new Range Rover Sport will cost from 83 to 122 thousand dollars, in the UK from 79 thousand pounds. That makes it more expensive than the outgoing Sport, which starts at $71,000.

In connection with the sanctions, it is unlikely that a new model will appear in our country in the near future, although the Russian Land Rover website has all the information about the new product.
