Import of “gray” spare parts will push auto companies to leave Russia

Earlier in the week, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced a list of companies from which cars and spare parts can be supplied to Russia without the consent of the copyright holder. As Gazeta.ru was informed at the ministry, this initiative should alleviate the situation of car services.

“First of all, this measure will help the dealer community meet its maintenance and repair obligations for vehicles of Russian consumers, by enabling the country to import original goods into the country without the consent of the brand owner,” the Ministry of Industry and Trade said. told the broadcast.

The ministry’s order, which specifically legalized the importation of foreign goods into the country, lists cars and components from Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, General Motors (including the Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC brands), Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge. as well as Volvo. Products from Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental and GoodYear tire brands, as well as components from Bosch, Mahle and Wabco. All these brands announced the partial or complete suspension of their activities in Russia.

Some Western companies are already reducing their operations. Thus, the General Motors concern announced last week that it has ceased its commercial activities in Russia. According to the Kommersant newspaper, while the Russian offices of Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover are shrinking, the Swedish brand plans to provide warranty service to cars sold in the country.

The products of automakers with large production facilities in Russia are not yet included in the list of parallel imports. At the same time, the ministry does not promise the same preferences to “suspended” foreigners.

Experts warn that representatives of automobile companies operating in Russia earn a significant part of their income from the sale of spare parts, and allowing alternative supply channels leads to the loss of a significant part of their profits.

“This is certainly a very important factor. All representations of automobile companies relied mainly on profits from the sale of spare parts and, to a lesser extent, financial services, ”says Sergey Burgazliev, an independent consultant in the automotive industry.

In terms of revenue, depending on the brand, this was about 30% for representative offices, but in profit – about 65-70%, the expert explains.

Of course, the loss of such a volume for foreigners is sure to be a reason to seriously think about further presence in Russia.

At the same time, spare parts imported through alternative channels will most likely not be cheaper than official ones, since the representative offices of automobile companies receive significant discounts from suppliers due to large-volume purchases.

“I believe that foreign automakers who announced their withdrawal from Russia later in principle may not be allowed to return,” says Burgazliev.

The supply and sale of original parts has always been a significant income for automobile brands. Sergey Udalov, managing director of the Avtostat analytical agency, states that quite high profits are made from both distributors and dealers.

Experts interviewed by socialbites.ca say that the legalization of parallel imports of branded spare parts will force foreign auto companies to finally withdraw from the Russian market. Now foreigners have adopted a wait-and-see stance, but the Russian authorities are demanding decisive action from them.
