JAC e-JS4 at first glance – an unremarkable compact crossover. A white electric car from China, which is tested by a journalist from Auto, Motor und Sport, makes little impression.
The author of the text recalls that the Chinese car company Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co., based in Hefei, has been producing cars under this name since 1999, and moreover, JAC is connected with Volkswagen through a joint venture.
But JAC e-JS4 is the Chinese’s own development. The electric car is based on a platform for an internal combustion engine, which is easily recognizable by the long front overhang.
The design of the e-JS4 is reminiscent of Hyundai and Citroën in places, with graphic lighting on the front and rear for example, but it doesn’t look fake.
Salon
The interior of the JAC e-JS4 is spacious, with plenty of legroom, especially in the rear. However, under the panoramic sliding glass roof, there are back-to-back seats for tall passengers. The trunk is quite large – 520 liters. But the luggage has to be carried through a rather high threshold of the back door. Folding down the split rear seat creates an uncomfortable step.
The distance to the pedals is electrically adjustable and the backrest must be adjusted manually. The handlebars are adjustable in height, but not in reach, making it difficult to find the ideal position.
The digital instrument panel is quite informative. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone interfaces are also on board.
Engine
The power unit still needs to be refined. A 142 kW (193 hp) electric motor drives the front wheels. Sounds good, but poorly executed: when you hit the throttle, both from a standstill and while driving, not much happens at first, then a sharp jerk.
There is a cruise control system on board, but it lacks sensors to keep the distance. You’ll search in vain for a blind spot warning system or an active lane departure warning system – there are none.
Charger
The lithium-ion battery provides a range of up to 270 km.
Via the CCS connector on the fast charger, 80 percent battery capacity must be reached in 45 minutes.
Conclusion
The Chinese offer a car in which there is a lot of space, high-quality finishes. The car is relatively docile in management, but the handling could be a bit tighter, the journalist notes.
The shortcomings of the car could have been “not noticed” for a good price, but it’s over here – taking into account the “environmental bonus” they ask for 39,995 euros (3 million rubles) for an electric car. It is too expensive, the German journalist believes, claiming that in Switzerland (which is not part of the EU) the model is sold by a local importer for 34,989 francs (2.5 million rubles). For this money he would still be willing to consider such a purchase.
