The Krestovsky Viaduct on the capital’s Mira Avenue is unusual in that there are two fountains at both ends. At the same time, the vast majority of travelers simply do not notice them, considering them some standard decorations. Meanwhile, these are active fountains! They were indeed decorative from 1937 to 2015, but then electricity was brought to them and pumps were installed.
It is curious that water for circulation – 7 tons for each bowl – is brought to them 2-3 times a week, or even more often if the weather is windy. Water partially splashes out, evaporates and does not return to the bowl.
According to some information, these fountains were conceived as an decoration of the road to VDNKh, of which the famous fountains “Friendship of Peoples” and “Stone Flower” are an integral part. After all, before the appearance of the metro, people traveled to the exhibition by land transport.
Mikhail Kolodochkin has been collecting unusual facts from the history of technology for many years. Did you know, for example, that in Russia there is a road tunnel 900 meters deep?
