Nissan Motor Co. is ready to cancel its alliance with Renault SA, fearing that the French automaker wants to license hundreds of jointly developed patented technologies to other players, including new Chinese partner Geely.
Nissan’s board and management recently expressed concern about Renault’s intellectual property plans, people familiar with the matter said.
The joint intellectual property includes approximately 500 innovative technologies, including automotive electrification, autonomous driving, hybrid powertrains, solid-state batteries, security systems, battery management software and other know-how necessary for the development of autonomous driving.
In November, Renault SA and the Chinese holding company Geely agreed to set up a joint venture to produce engines. Nissan sees risks here and seeks assurances that key technologies are protected in any deal with the Chinese side.
About negotiations
Negotiations on the reorganization of the Renault-Nissan alliance have been going on for several months. Renault will reduce its stake in Nissan to 15% from the current 43%. In return, Nissan must invest between $500 million and $750 million in a stake in a new electric vehicle division called Ampere that Renault plans to create.
