When is it legal to change tires?
The timing of the replacement is governed by the Technical Regulations, which prohibit the use of summer tires for three winter months. However, it is necessary to take care of changing shoes when the average daily temperature starts to drop under +7 . fall°C.
By going to the tire assembly in advance, you will avoid queues and be fully prepared if ice forms in the morning after a frosty night.
Keep in mind: fines are not yet issued for driving on summer tires in the winter and on winter tires in the summer. You can only be fined for excessively worn tires, but this has nothing to do with seasonality.
Velcro or studded tires – which is better?
Use Velcro (they are also friction clutches) or studded rubber, depending on the region of the country and operating conditions:
- Studded tires make more noise, but on ice they are more effective than the clutch.
- Velcro is more suitable for driving on city roads, which are liberally sprayed with reagents.
So couplings are more suitable for a big city, and if you often travel out of town or live in a small town with roads that have poor snow clearance, then spikes are your choice. On such tires it will be easier to drive on snow rollers and tracks.
How to store tires properly?
Tires should be thoroughly cleaned before being stored. This can be done with a pressure washer or simply with a sponge and water.
The optimum temperature range for tire storage is from minus 35°C to plus 35°C.
A great option for storing wheels is to hang them in the garage.
When storing tires, remember:
- It is not recommended to leave tires outside or under shelter. A relatively warm room is required.
- Heating devices should not be placed closer than one meter from the tires.
- Rubber that has not worn off on the wheels must be installed vertically. It is undesirable to hang or stack the tires on top of each other.
- Tires on rims must remain inflated and may be hung and stacked.

Do tires need to be rolled in?
Definitely yes.
The running-in conditions depend on the type of tire.
- For studded tires the run-in is about 1000 km. It is necessary to drive smoothly during run-in, try to avoid sudden starts and braking. It is better to drive the first 100 km at a speed of no more than 90 km/h.
- It takes 400 to 500 km to drive in friction clutches.
- Only 100 km is enough to drive with summer and all-season tires.
