A recent analysis of auto insurance data highlights how claim activity can vary by gender, month, and age. The study finds that January shows a higher share of total losses involving female drivers, with a notable portion of insured events ending in a total loss where the vehicle cannot be repaired. Specifically, women accounted for about one-fifth of such incidents in January, with other peak months including March and February when totals represented around 19 percent and 16 percent of the totals, respectively.
According to the report, the first quarter tends to feature more total losses involving female drivers, while the summer months see a decrease in overall risk for women behind the wheel as driving patterns change. The data suggest seasonal differences in how often vehicles are written off, rather than a simple year-round pattern.
Age also appears to correlate with the likelihood of experiencing a total loss. The analysis identifies 38 as a particularly high point, representing roughly 6 percent of such incidents. Geographic variation is another notable factor. When excluding major metropolitan areas, younger women in the Voronezh region show a higher share of total losses, followed by drivers in the Rostov region and the Krasnodar region. The study also reports that the average insurance payment related to a total loss tied to a female driver approaches 900 thousand rubles, with the maximum payment observed in the Moscow region reaching around 2 million rubles for a destroyed vehicle such as a Volkswagen Tiguan.
