Experts from Za Rulem, the long-standing authority in automotive journalism, Sergey Mishin and Dmitry Testov, evaluated winter tires with studs for crossovers in size 235/60 R18. This is a common fit for premium models like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, as well as popular crossovers such as the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe.

The core focus of the test is to compare tires from different price brackets. Eight sets of winter tires were assessed. The study included both top-tier options like the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10P SUV and more affordable choices such as Viatti Bosco Nordico and Tigar SUV Ice, priced at about 7,500 and 11,000 rubles respectively, along with the domestic Yokohama iceGuard iG worth under 15,000 rubles, roughly 65 rubles cheaper.

Viatti Bosco Nordico

These Russian tires surprised with strong braking on dry pavement and a comfortable ride overall. They hold a steady line on asphalt and deliver solid handling on snowy and icy surfaces.

However, they exhibit weak grip on ice and longer stopping distances on wet roads. They also show the highest rolling resistance among the tested tires.

Tigar SUV Ice

These Serbian tires demonstrated notable advantages, particularly in braking on asphalt. They maintain a straight course on asphalt and offer respectable off-road traction. They also contribute to a smoother driving feel for the crossover.

Drawbacks include limited longitudinal grip on snow, reduced handling on snowy roads, and more noise than average.

These tires deliver strong lateral grip and good acceleration on ice. They also provide solid cross-country ability and stable tracking on various surfaces.

Minor downsides include insufficient longitudinal grip on snow and slightly weaker directional stability on dry pavement compared to ice. Some noise on snow was also noted by testers.

How should budget tires be chosen?

Knowing typical winter driving conditions helps save money by selecting a tire that prioritizes the most important traits. Readers can explore tire properties in the extensive tests conducted by Za Rulem and published on their site.
