Public transport advice is not the focus here. Fuel costs rise in winter, and while the savings won’t match those of a warmer season, there are practical moves a driver can make. The emphasis stays on feasible, everyday steps that can trim fuel use without sacrificing comfort or safety, as explained by a driving expert, Alexey Revin.
From his perspective, the key is to cut small, easily overlooked expenditures. A few well-chosen habits can add up to noticeable savings. For instance, when starting the engine in cold weather, there is value in a brief warm-up. Allow the engine to idle for a minute or two and then begin driving at a gentle pace. This approach lets the engine reach an efficient operating temperature faster and reduces fuel consumption over the first few miles.
Another straightforward step is to keep the car free of snow and excess weight. Snow adds unnecessary mass and increases energy demand. Seasonal engine oil, matched to the climate, matters as well. In cold weather, certain oil grades perform better than others, so selecting an oil like 0W-40 can improve lubrication and reduce resistance compared to heavier winter formulations.
Practical load management also pays off. Removing items that aren’t needed for daily use, such as clutter that ends up buried in the trunk, helps lower overall vehicle weight. If the car carries extra gear on the roof rack during winter, consider removing it when not in use to cut aerodynamic drag and save fuel. Every kilogram matters at the pump—and the lighter the ride, the less energy is required to move it.
For colder days, a car blanket or insulating cover can help retain heat around the engine bay. A warmer engine starts more efficiently, reaches optimal temperature sooner, and maintains that temperature longer, which translates into steadier fuel economy during the warm-up phase and during short trips where the engine might otherwise cool quickly.

Vote – win Lada!
Readers are invited to participate in the Behind the Wheel Grand Prix poll, a community event designed to highlight the year’s most notable car introductions. The goal is to identify which innovations and models stand out in a competitive market and deserve recognition from motorists across North America.
As a thank-you for taking part, three prizes are offered to respondents in the survey. Everyone who completes the questionnaire by the deadline has a chance to win, with a draw scheduled after the close of voting. The initiative encourages thoughtful feedback and helps spotlight vehicles that resonate with real drivers.
