Winter Driving Tips to Improve Fuel Economy and Ease on the Engine

Experts commonly recommend shortening the engine warm-up time when temperatures drop. In practical terms, letting the engine wake up for two to three minutes is usually enough. After that, beginning to drive slowly helps the engine reach optimal operating temperature without wasting fuel. The idea is to minimize idle warmth and get moving so the engine can warm itself efficiently while the car is in motion.

For drivers who like to keep a light snow cover on the roof, there is a tradeoff to consider. A snow mantle on top creates extra weight and disrupts aerodynamics, which raises air resistance and, in turn, increases fuel consumption. When possible, clearing snow from the roof and other exposed surfaces helps keep the vehicle more energy efficient. A tidy exterior also reduces wind uplift and keeps handling predictable in winter conditions.

Wheel and tire care remains essential for fuel efficiency. Tire pressure should stay within the manufacturer’s recommended range. In winter, cold air reduces tire pressure, which raises rolling resistance and can push fuel use higher. Regularly checking and adjusting tire pressures helps preserve efficiency and tire longevity.

Using a lower viscosity oil can be beneficial in cold weather, aiding easier starts and smoother lubrication during the initial minutes after startup. This choice should align with the vehicle’s manufacturer guidance to ensure adequate protection for engine components throughout the season.

Short idle periods typically produce a minor, temporary temperature drop for the engine. When a vehicle is parked briefly, a light blanket of insulation helps reduce heat loss, meaning less effort is required for a subsequent warm-up. In modern engines, even brief stops can be managed with careful starting practices that prioritize gradual warming rather than extended idling.

Vote – win Lada!

Readers are invited to participate in the Behind the Wheel Grand Prix vote to help identify the best car introductions of the year. The contest engages enthusiasts across North America who want to share their opinions on new models and features that matter most when selecting a car for winter driving and daily use.

As a thank you for taking part in the survey, a drawing will be held among participants with three ferrets as prizes. Everyone who completes the questionnaire before the stated deadline has a chance to win, and the drawing is open to entrants across Canada and the United States.
