In extremely cold weather, drivers frequently notice leaks under the engine, transmission, and power steering system. Reports cited by Rossiyskaya Gazeta reference the technical director of Fit Service, Alexey Ruzanov, explaining that such leaks can ultimately lead to major component failures. The phenomenon is common when cars spend the night outdoors in subfreezing conditions and, come morning, puddles of various colors appear under the vehicle. The leaks typically involve the engine, gearbox, and power steering. The root causes often lie in the fasteners and seals: oil seals may tighten or shift, rubber seals harden and shrink in the cold, and plastic parts become brittle and prone to cracking. In addition, severe cold can take a toll on suspension components including bushings, stabilizer links, and CV joint boots. Experts note that the first failures in freezing temperatures are often the parts that had required maintenance or repair prior to the cold snaps. In some instances, counterfeit auto parts have entered the market, complicating maintenance. In 2023 counterfeit products were found most commonly among original parts from well known European and Japanese makers of components and engine oils, a trend that raises concerns for vehicle owners seeking reliability in harsh climates. At times, prices for car repair services in Russia have risen by about a quarter, adding another layer of difficulty for drivers facing winter wear and tear.
