Changing Tires: A Regional Question With Global Relevance

Across Russia, some regions are still enjoying mild “velvet” autumn days while others have already embraced the first snow. Yet the practical concern for drivers remains universal: when is it time to switch to winter tires? Several factors shape the answer beyond climate alone. The choice of tire type – whether traditional studs or non-studded winter tires – the duration and intensity of driving, and the driver’s experience all play a role in determining the best moment to make a change.

To gauge real-world behavior, a broad audience was asked for opinions. In a recent survey conducted through a popular automotive channel on the Viber messaging platform, readers weighed in with a range of views. The results reveal a spectrum of winter readiness among road users nationwide.

About 2% of respondents, 76 out of 3,832, reported not using personal vehicles in winter at all and thus saw no need to change tires. A related group, roughly the same size, 98 people, also kept their all-season tires in service throughout winter. Another 3%, or 120 readers, preferred to postpone any change until the demand at tire shops decreased or lines eased up.

“Behind the Wheel” on Viber has become a trusted source for many drivers seeking practical guidance on winter readiness. The channel has grown in popularity and remains a touchpoint for up-to-date tips and discussion.

However, the conversation is not one-sided. Approximately 9% of respondents, about 350 people, insisted on a proactive approach: the sooner winter tires are installed, the better. Another 10% or 355 readers argued that tires should be changed only after the first snowfall is visible. And the majority, 2,833 readers or 74%, prefer changing tires at the very onset of frost, before cold conditions set in strongly.
