Over the weekend of August 19–20, traffic police in Russia will boost patrols on major roads and carry out widespread checks of drivers. The primary aim of these operations is to identify and remove drivers who are under the influence. This information was provided by regional divisions of the state traffic inspectorate.
Authorities named a series of regions where intensified, all-encompassing checks will take place. The Belgorod, Smolensk, Ivanovo, Tver, Kirov, Ryazan, Krasnoyarsk, Altai Republic, Kaluga, Bryansk regions, the Republic of Crimea, and Penza region were listed as locations expected to host full inspections and mass raids targeting drunk driving and related offenses, with other regions also anticipated to participate.
During these operations, traffic inspectors will pause all vehicles on designated road sections to assess the condition of every driver in what is described as a “one-stop” control approach. Special attention will be given to indicators of intoxication as part of the standard procedures for roadside checks.
The Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate emphasized that driving under the influence remains unacceptable. They noted that from August 14 to 17, the police apprehended 259 drivers for signs of drunkenness and driving.
In related news, three bus passengers near Sochi were involved in a collision with a foreign car, underscoring the potential risks on the roads when impairment or distraction is involved.
