Volgograd Investigates Attempted Fire at Mamaev Kurgan Cultural Site

According to initial findings, on the morning of March 16 a motorcyclist bypassed a barrier and entered the memorial-ensemble dedicated to the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad. Investigators state that the individual paused near a mass grave and manipulated a gas canister and incendiary device in a manner suggesting intent to cause damage to the site.

A local security guard observed the man attempting to start the motorcycle and flee, and he was detained at the scene. The motorcyclist, a 27-year-old resident of Volgograd, is cooperating with investigators as they work to determine the motive behind the incident. He is suspected of committing a crime under Part 3 of Article 30, Chapter 2, Article 243 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which covers attempting to damage objects of cultural heritage belonging to the peoples of the Russian Federation.
