A USB port was added to the upper central glove compartment of a Lada Grants to power smartphones on the go. The project began with a clean, simple modification that keeps the interior tidy while expanding charging capabilities for daily drives.
- A power outlet with a switch was mounted by drilling a hole and shaping the edge with a crown bit along the right wall of the compartment.
- The new outlet ties into the cigarette lighter circuit through the fuse box, ensuring proper protection and compatibility with the vehicle’s electrical system.
- A foldable magnetic holder was attached to the inside of the lid, providing a secure, compact mount for a smartphone when the box is closed or opened.
The setup makes using a smartphone as a navigation device straightforward. The screen remains easily visible without obstructing the driver’s view, and the lid can be closed to keep the device charged during idle moments or longer trips.
Notes on practicality: installing the USB port in the glove box creates a dedicated charging point that minimizes clutter in the cabin. It also offers a convenient way to manage device placement, preventing cords from cluttering the dashboard or pedals. For safety, care was taken to route cables away from moving parts and heat sources, reducing wear and tear on both the wiring and the phone accessory itself.
With a tidy, integrated solution, drivers can rely on reliable power for maps, music, and hands-free communication while keeping the vehicle’s interior neat and organized.
