A Japanese automaker, Toyota, has issued a directive restricting the use of several of its older vehicles, specifically some models that are now two decades old. Reports from motor1.com indicate that the decision follows safety concerns tied to Takata airbags, which have a history of rupturing and causing injuries. The precaution aims to prevent incidents tied to defective airbag inflators that could deploy unexpectedly and threaten driver and passenger safety.

The ban targets certain model years and configurations, including the 2003-2004 Corolla, the 2003-2004 Corolla Matrix, and the 2004-2005 RAV4. In the case of the RAV4, the affected version is equipped with a side airbag that must be replaced, while the Corolla’s issue centers on a front passenger airbag. These recalls highlight broader industry concerns about airbag reliability and the importance of timely maintenance for aging vehicles.

Across the globe, more than 30 individuals have reported injuries or fatalities associated with defective Takata airbags. The United States accounts for the largest share of these outcomes, with 26 reported cases linked to the inflator problems. The incidents have spurred manufacturers to accelerate safety recalls and communicate clearly with owners about replacement timelines and options.

In related news, reports indicate that Tesla began recalling around 200,000 Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles released in 2023 to address an issue with electronic components. The concern involves image display on the vehicle monitor, which can fail to render when the car is in reverse, potentially increasing the risk of an accident during maneuvers. Owners are advised to follow the official recall directions to have affected components inspected and, if necessary, replaced by certified technicians.

Earlier, Porsche also issued recalls for certain Carrera GT supercars, though some batches reportedly remained difficult to repair. The ongoing pattern of recalls across brands underscores the persistent need for rigorous quality control and proactive maintenance in modern vehicles, especially as models age and accumulate more miles on the road. The emphasis for drivers is to stay informed about safety advisories, verify eligibility for recalls, and consult authorized service centers to ensure timely remediation and continued roadworthiness.
