Production was set to halt at eight Japanese factories belonging to Toyota starting May 16, 2022, because supplies of essential components from China faced interruptions. The shift came as China maintained restrictive measures tied to the Covid-19 outbreak, which disrupted local manufacturing activity.
“Due to a semiconductor shortage, Toyota revised its May production plan. During the stoppage of deliveries from Shanghai from May 16 to May 21, fourteen production lines across eight Japanese plants will pause operations. Toyota had aimed for a May output target near 750,000 units; however, supply disruptions are expected to bring that figure closer to 700,000 units,” the company stated in a formal release.
Earlier reports noted Japan’s decision to ban the import of high-priced cars into Russia. The policy applied to vehicles exceeding six million yen, or roughly 3.1 million rubles at the current exchange rate. The statement did not specify which price measure was used. It could reflect the factory retail price, the value declared at customs, or the final consumer price charged by dealers, and the exact interpretation remained unclear.
