Toyota Motor Company will end domestic sales of the Camry sedan in Japan by the close of 2023, according to Japanese business daily Nikkei. The move means Toyota plans to stop Camry production for Japanese customers, while exports will continue from existing plants.

Toyota has already halted new orders for the Camry in Japan. The model will be offered only to international markets going forward. Reasons cited for the decline include a shortage of automotive semiconductors and shifting consumer taste toward crossovers and minivans, which contributed to a steep drop in Japanese demand. Last year, domestic Camry sales fell below 6,000 units.

Currently, Camry production takes place in the United States, China, and a plant in the Aichi prefecture of Japan. Since its 1980 introduction, the Camry has surpassed 21 million global sales, with about 1.3 million sold in Japan and roughly 13 million in the United States. The tenth generation model has been in production since 2017.

In 2021, the Camry ranked tenth among the most popular car models in Russia. By 2022, Toyota ceased car deliveries to the Russian market and closed the St. Petersburg plant. In early 2022, the Camry’s price in Russia stood at about 2.1 million rubles.

Earlier reports indicated that the Camry’s Chinese rival, also named Camry, would appear in Russia before the end of the summer. This reflects the broader regional dynamics affecting Toyota’s global lineup and the evolving preferences of buyers in major markets.
