Russian Railways has put forward a plan to impose criminal liability on drivers in the event of a collision with a train, regardless of how severe the outcome might be. The company’s position is conveyed through its press service in reports cited by RIA Novosti.

The proposal also calls for strengthening administrative accountability for violations on railway lines. It recommends extending the minimum suspension period to six months, with a maximum of one year, and up to two years for repeated offenses. The organization has submitted these proposals to the government for consideration.

Russian Railways stresses that breaches of railway safety rules create heightened danger, and therefore driver responsibility should be elevated accordingly.

Data shows there were 245 accidents at railway crossings in 2023, a rise of 12 percent from the year before, underscoring the ongoing safety challenges in rail traffic management.

In related political discussions, MP Biysultan Khamzaev has advocated banning the use of augmented reality glasses while driving. He argues that such devices can distract or impair a driver’s perception and reaction times.

AR glasses function as a compact fusion of computer processing, media display, and communication, controlled by eye and hand movements, which raises concerns about their impact on real-time driving tasks.

There have been earlier reports suggesting that new traffic control concepts, such as contour-lit traffic lights, could appear in Moscow, signaling ongoing interest in upgrading urban safety and efficiency on the road network. [Source attribution: RIA Novosti]
