Investigators are examining the circumstances of a deadly road accident that occurred near Novosibirsk when a passenger bus appears to have veered into the opposite lane. The information originated from the Telegram channel maintained by the district administration, which circulated details shortly after the collision.

The incident happened around 11:00 local time on the 87th kilometer stretch of the K-17r highway. The Haiger bus, carrying 47 passengers, was en route from Novosibirsk to Chistoozernoye when the crash occurred.

Preliminary reports indicate that the bus driver moved into oncoming traffic, leading the vehicle to collide with a Chevrolet Niva traveling in the opposite direction. The regional government confirmed that the Niva was the other vehicle involved when the bus crossed into its lane, resulting in the collision.

Officials speaking with the NGS.RU portal stated that the Niva driver, a 39-year-old man, died at the scene. A 12-year-old boy in the same vehicle sustained bruises and a concussion. A witness described hearing a sudden impact and witnessing the bus slip into a ditch before tipping into a deep puddle that submerged much of the passenger compartment.

A bystander who happened to be driving by pulled a covered trailer to the scene and assisted passengers in escaping through windows along the pier side. The bus, trapped in the ditch, slid into the water and passengers emerged soaked from the flood in the pooling area.

One eyewitness recalled seeing the bus shake violently as it traveled along the road, then begin to slow and finally tip over. Another observer noted that a nearby puddle resembled a lake at the time, adding to the dramatic scene of the accident.

As part of emergency response measures, the remaining passengers were transported to Chistoozernoye using spare aircraft. In total, 11 people were hospitalized, while some were discharged after initial medical evaluation. In separate statements, health officials indicated that three more victims were admitted to Orda Central Regional Hospital, with two in moderate condition after examinations by the medical staff.

Eyewitnesses who rushed to assist reported that most passengers were visibly shocked but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The immediate focus of responders was to check on everyone on board and coordinate safe egress from the vehicle.

Additional accounts described the emotional impact of the scene. One witness shared with Gazeta.ru that a body lay near the overturned car, underscoring the severity of the tragedy.

This accident comes amid ongoing discussions about road safety in Russia. In February 2019, the president of Russia spoke about the persistent challenges on the nation’s road network, noting that traffic fatalities remain unacceptably high and emphasizing the need for improvements. Later, traffic statistics reported by the police in July 2022 showed a mixed picture, with a decline in overall incidents compared with the previous year, but continuing regional disparities in risk and outcomes. The broader context illustrates the ongoing concern over road safety in the country and the effort to reduce casualties across regions.

Authorities continue to review the incident to determine exact causation, assess vehicle conditions, and evaluate road factors that may have contributed to the outcome. The investigation aims to provide clear answers for the families affected and to inform future safety measures along this route.
