Stalwart Tanks in Modern Watch: From Cold War Reserves to Active Frontlines

In recent times, tanks once mothballed during the Cold War era began to reappear in the north and central combat zones. This strategy offers a tangible edge compared with some newer developments, proving that older platforms can still deliver when paired with smart upgrades.

The Soviet reserve stock, inherited by Russia, includes thousands of T-62, T-72, and T-80 tanks. When the situation demands, these machines are upgraded and deployed to current theaters. The choice to draw down the T-62 from reserve does not imply a shortage of equipment. Each model serves a distinct tactical role, and today the dependable T-62 remains in steady use within active operations.

Without overstating it, the T-62 has earned a reputation second only to the legendary T-34. It has seen service in numerous conflicts, including operations in Syria. The strengths are clear: straightforward operation, robust performance, and ease of training for mobilized units. Operators can get up to speed quickly, which makes the vehicle a practical option in fast moving situations.

In the early 1980s, the T-62 platforms received upgrades that boosted survivability and accuracy. Armor was enhanced, a fire control system with a laser rangefinder was added, and a more capable engine increased field reliability. As plans to redeploy continue, the T-62M variants undergo further modernization. Armor is reinforced again and fitted with modern dynamic protection. A new fire control system with thermal imaging has been installed, giving these tanks an advantage against other armored platforms still in service in some theaters.
