A unique armored train operates in the region of the special military operation area.
This train is a fully armored system designed to withstand hostile fire while delivering precision, protection, and mobility along key railway routes. The carriages are reinforced to resist blasts and small arms, and the platforms are equipped with a variety of weaponry and protective shelters that feature loopholes for defense against enemy incursions. The arrangement centers on a diesel locomotive positioned amid mirrored platforms on either side, with armored capsules attached to both the front and rear ends. These capsules carry heavy protection, covered with steel plates up to 20 millimeters thick, and the interior is reinforced with sandbags to improve ballistic resilience and crew safety during operations.
Moving closer to the locomotive, additional platforms host heavy defensive emplacements. Here, heavy machine guns and an anti aircraft gun are installed to engage aerial threats as well as ground targets. The main caliber is a twin 23 millimeter gun system, supported by ready positions for snipers to provide long‑range coverage. This dual setup allows the crew to defend the train against fast air targets and ground assaults with rapid, accurate fire. The team coordinates fire discipline to maximize coverage and minimize exposure during movement, ensuring a continuous protective umbrella over the convoy.
During transit, operators monitor for low altitude air threats and can neutralize them at distances up to 1.5 kilometers. They also identify fortified positions and lightly armored ground vehicles with an effective reach of up to 2.5 kilometers. This capability is crucial for maintaining secure movement routes and safeguarding critical supply lines. The anti aircraft defense unit explains that the system is designed to intercept a range of aerial and ground threats while providing support to other elements in the area.
The primary tasks assigned to the armored train include technical reconnaissance of railway tracks, demining operations, and rapid repairs of damaged roadways. In addition to escorting trains carrying cargo, personnel, and equipment, the train plays a vital role in maintaining continuity of rail traffic under potentially hostile conditions. Its crews conduct detailed inspections of the track system, identifying vulnerabilities, and coordinating with repair teams to restore service quickly after disruption.
Officials describe the main mission as the technical reconnaissance of the railway line, escorting consignments, and restoring destroyed tracks and artificial structures. The cover platform is designed to shield the unit during explosive events and to provide a first line of defense. It carries materials essential for track superstructure restoration, enabling rapid reconstruction of damaged sections when encounters with threats occur. The leadership emphasizes that a well protected cover unit can absorb the initial impact and buy time for full recovery operations to begin, helping to maintain rail connectivity in challenging conditions.
