The car handles parking autonomously, seeking out a free spot and guiding itself into place. This holds true when the Mercedes-Benz system with Bosch technology is in use, provided the parking area has the right infrastructure in place for the system to operate.
Mercedes-Benz and Bosch have developed a self parking technology that received approval from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, known as the KBA. It is currently being tested in a multi-story car park in Stuttgart to evaluate real world performance and reliability.
Inside the vehicle, a network of sensors and cameras builds a precise 3D map of the parking environment. The system continuously monitors routes inside and around the garage, using the Bosch data stream to guide the vehicle. When the car receives this information, it can move smoothly through the floors without bothering other drivers or pedestrians. The automated system is also capable of recognizing sudden obstacles and responding safely to avoid collisions.
At present the automatic parking feature is offered on select S-Class and EQS models. The plan is to extend availability to additional models in the near term, broadening access for more Mercedes-Benz customers.
Looking ahead, the Bosch system is slated to roll out across an additional 15 multi-storey car parks in major German cities during 2023, expanding the reach of hands-free parking technology.
