In October 2023, Russia saw a notable surge in passenger car sales, reaching 112.2 thousand units and marking a 2.6-fold increase from October 2022. The findings come from Avtostat, the analytical agency whose data is often cited for market dynamics in the domestic automotive sector. This momentum reflects a mix of demand recovery, model refresh cycles, and ongoing shifts in consumer preferences across the country’s regions.
AvtoVAZ maintained its position as the market leader, delivering an average of 34.5 thousand Lada vehicles each month. Following closely was China’s Haval, which recorded 12.8 thousand vehicle sales in October. Trailing behind were Chery with 10.9 thousand units and Geely with 10.3 thousand. Changan contributed 6.4 thousand cars, while Chery’s sub-brands Omoda and Exeed posted 4.8 thousand and 4.4 thousand units respectively, underscoring the strong presence of Chinese brands in the Russian market during this period.
Other notable performers included Kia and Toyota, whose October tally stood at 2.6 thousand and 2.2 thousand vehicles respectively. The top ten brands list also featured Jetour, which sold 1.9 thousand cars, illustrating a diverse competitive landscape with multiple brands sharing the volume mix across different segments.
Looking at the year-to-date performance for January through October 2023, Russia registered 829.5 thousand new passenger car sales, representing a 60 percent increase over the same period in the previous year. This robust year-to-date figure highlights sustained demand and the market’s resilience amid broader economic and regulatory factors shaping consumer behavior in the period.
Additionally, it was noted at the close of October that AvtoVAZ achieved a ten-year sales milestone, signaling a significant benchmark in the company’s market footprint and suggesting enduring appeal for its model lineup among Russian buyers. The broader competitive environment, characterized by the steady presence of international brands alongside domestic players, contributed to a dynamic marketplace with shifting brand loyalties and varying model cycles across the calendar year.
