In September 2022, the SUV surge in Russia held strong, with crossovers and sport utility vehicles filling a dominant share of the market
New data reported by Avtostat, based on figures from PPK JSC, show that 23,455 crossovers and SUVs were purchased in September 2022. This accounted for 52.8% of the total passenger car market, underscoring a continued trend where SUVs outpace other segments. The SUV category has remained above the 50% threshold for several consecutive months, reflecting a durable preference in consumer choices.
There was a temporary dip in August when the combined SUV share slipped to 49.5%. In September, the market bounced back, reaching the previous high level as sales of certain SUV models, including Lada Niva Legend and Niva Travel, regained momentum and helped lift the overall figure. This suggests that specific product availability and model refreshes can meaningfully influence market dynamics within the light vehicle segment.
Interest in the so-called Chinese brands has grown, with a model lineup that largely centers on sport utility vehicles, aligning with broader consumer demand for practicality and elevated confidence in modern SUVs.
The B-class segment contributed a sizable share, accounting for 38.9% of sales in September. Taken together, the SUV and B-segment vehicles represent well over nine tenths of market activity for the country two months running, illustrating a sustained tilt toward higher-riding, versatile models among Russian buyers.
