As of March 1, the barcode on Russian drivers’ licenses may disappear from the document. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation has already disclosed a draft decision to remove this element from the permissions. The change aims to simplify the card while keeping the essential features intact for identification. Historically, the barcode helped verify the authenticity of the license and was printed on the back of the card.
In its justification, the Interior Ministry states that when a driver’s license is issued, there is no need to generate a barcode on the back because this barcode is currently not used to read information. This reflects a broader move to streamline documents while preserving what is necessary for verification. Official notes emphasize that the primary method of confirming validity remains straightforward visual inspection and standard data stored on the card itself.
In current practice, information from the license is accessible through official channels rather than by scanning a back-side barcode, illustrating a shift in how authorities handle verification in everyday use.
- The monitoring and sharing of license validity can be discussed through official platforms and sanctioned channels.
