Over the past month, a noticeable pattern emerged in the Russian automotive market: weekly sales climbed steadily. This upswing comes even as domestic production of passenger cars contracted sharply during the first seven months of 2022. According to the analytical bureau Avtostat, citing data from JSC PPK, a total of 10,798 automobiles were sold from September 19 to September 25. This figure marks a clear weekly increase and signals a rebound in consumer demand that surprised some industry observers.
In fact, the period recorded a 12 percent rise compared with the previous week. A noteworthy share of this growth was captured by the Lada brand, which alone accounted for more than 40 percent of the volume with 4,464 cars sold, up 13 percent from the prior week. Chery, ranking second, posted a smaller overall volume but delivered a striking week-over-week surge of 34 percent, totaling 887 units. The performance of each brand is shaping a more dynamic competitive landscape as dealers adjust to shifting consumer preferences and inventory conditions.
Kia remained firmly in the top three, moving 799 units with a modest 6 percent week-on-week gain. Haval, while showing a slight decrease in momentum, remained close behind with 711 cars sold, down 3 percent. Hyundai also secured a place in the leading group, selling 700 vehicles, which represented a 16 percent increase. Collectively, the remaining brands in the market registered fewer than 700 units for the week, emphasizing the concentration of demand around a small number of key players.
From a model perspective, the Lada Granta led the market, with dealers delivering 3,145 copies to customers during the week, marking a 15 percent improvement over the previous seven days. Among the models generating notable attention, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro debuted strongly in the ranking, earning second place with 607 units and a remarkable 51 percent weekly rise. Additional top five entries included the Lada Niva Legend with 515 units, up 8 percent, the Haval Jolion with 442 units, down 16 percent, and the Lada Niva Travel with 289 units, gaining 42 percent. The current moment has brought clear changes to the market, and analysts believe these shifts will continue to shape buying patterns in the near term.
