Despite sanctions imposed by countries hostile to Russia and forecasts of a shrinking car market, 102 new models were brought to Russian drivers in 2023, according to analytics agency Avtostat.

Chinese brands formed the backbone of the new offerings, accounting for 90 of the launches. The second half of the year proved more dynamic than the first, with October and November standing out as the busiest months for premieres, each hosting 16 new car introductions. There were at least three new models revealed in February as well.

Meanwhile, most brands that currently operate in Russia have already announced plans to broaden their model ranges in 2024. Analysts warn that this expansion could lead to an overstock in the market, potentially affecting pricing and availability for buyers in the region and beyond.

Industry observers noted that Russians spent a record sum on used cars in 2023, underscoring a strong consumer appetite across the market even as new-vehicle supply faced geopolitical headwinds and policy constraints. This trend reflects a broader pattern seen in other markets where price signals, availability, and currency dynamics influence buying behavior for both new and pre-owned vehicles.
