Russia launches local ABS production in Kostroma

Russia is set to begin local production of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) for cars at a facility in Kostroma, according to Vasily Shpak, deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. He told RIA Novosti that the transition to domestic ABS will start with deliveries to Russian automotive plants on July 1, signaling a shift away from imported components.

Shpak confirmed that ABS is already entering serial production in Kostroma. He stated, “The serial delivery of ABS to Russian automakers will begin on July 1”, underscoring the government’s push to expand domestic manufacturing in the automotive sector.

While the deputy minister did not provide exact dates for the full scale launch of Kostroma-based ABS production, he noted that Russia has achieved progress in replacing imports for several critical components. Specifically, efforts have borne fruit in replacing some sensors, electronic control units, and wiring harnesses with domestically produced equivalents, helping to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

In related policy developments, the government is examining measures to favor the use of Russian-made cars in taxis and car-sharing services. A formal assessment and a set of proposed requirements are expected to be presented to the President by August 1, as part of an ongoing effort to bolster national automotive supply chains and expand the market for domestic vehicles.
