Road cameras keep expanding their reach. Today, a phone call or an unfastened seat belt can trigger a fine for the driver. For the latter, cameras can catch the offense both in daylight and after dark—the infrared systems firing up at night to capture the moment clearly.
Yet technology isn’t foolproof, and a careful driver who wore a seat belt might still face a penalty.
The TsODD has acknowledged lingering flaws in the operation of these systems, noting that several factors can affect photo reliability. A dirty windshield, glare, shadows, and even the driver’s clothing can distort the image and influence the outcome.
Challenging such a fine is often difficult, warns car expert Aleksey Khresin. Those who want to contest the ticket are advised to pursue a court case. The testimony of a passenger who was inside the vehicle at the moment the photo was taken can also help. According to the expert, improvements in software are essential to reducing the frequency of wrongful fines issued by camera systems.
