Two renowned historians of Russia’s domestic automotive story have released new work exploring the early to mid-20th century journey of passenger cars in Russia and the USSR. The book is co-authored by Sergei Kanunnikov, known for Behind the Wheel, and Maxim Shelepenkov, whose publications have long captivated enthusiasts of automotive history.
Covering the period from 1896 to today, this first installment gathers cars that defined a smaller class in the broader landscape. It traces everything from the Serpukhov plant’s motorized carriages to the later generations like Zaporozhets and Tavria, offering a thorough look at a category often overlooked in broad histories.
The authorial perspective
Reviewer from Behind the Wheel, Sergei Kanunnikov, reflects on the work:
— The book opens a vast and diverse world of automobiles. It showcases prototypes, multiple series, and a wide array of modifications. It also documents experimental and one-off vehicles, along with privately built and racing cars that tell the full story of a nation’s drive toward modern mobility.
He hints at the forthcoming second part, which will focus on models built on Moskvich foundations. Topics will include vehicles from Izhevsk and AZLK, the Avtokam brand, as well as racing cars and related topics, expanding the map of Russia’s automotive footprint.
