Russian President Vladimir Putin has enacted a law expanding the use of remote medical evaluations for commercial drivers. The adjustment is designed to streamline required health checks while ensuring that those who operate large vehicles stay fit to drive. Transport experts explain precisely who this change will affect and how it will be implemented in daily workflows.

According to industry analyst Igor Morzharetto, pre-trip inspections will increasingly be handled by professionals working in the transportation sector. He notes that these inspections are essential for safety, especially when drivers must be assessed continuously or outside of standard medical hours. The remote appointment option was introduced to guarantee that drivers receive timely medical oversight without delaying important trips or requiring offsite visits that could disrupt operations.

Morzharetto adds that without a dedicated on-site physician, some transport companies struggle to verify a driver’s health status consistently. He points out a troubling trend where some enterprises acquire a bundle of certificates with seals to satisfy regulatory requirements, which undermines safety and accountability. Remote medical assessments aim to curb such practices by providing traceable, verifiable health documentation conducted under professional supervision.

To support the new process, employers will acquire equipment capable of monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, and the presence of alcohol vapor in a driver’s breath. This technology enables medical professionals to evaluate a driver’s condition remotely and promptly flag any concerns that could affect safety on the road. The combination of real-time data and remote consultations helps ensure that only medically cleared drivers take the wheel, reducing risk for both operators and the public.
