Automatic transmissions sit high on the list of costly car components, second only to the engine. Because of that, buyers should pay close attention to how the transmission performs over time. Repairs on automatic gearboxes are seldom inexpensive and are usually handled at dedicated service centers rather than by casual handymen.
With this in mind, it makes sense to seek crossovers that have a strong record for reliable automatic transmissions.
Nissan X-Trail
The six speed automatic Jatco JF613E began production in 2006 and is installed in the Nissan X-Trail and Renault Koleos with 2 liter diesel engines. The Jatco unit is known for its high reliability.
The gearset offers a generous safety margin, yet aggressive driving, frequent light traffic in hot weather, and heavy loads can cause the oil to degrade and accelerate wear. When the vehicle operates in a charged mode, it is advised to replace both the oil and filter every two years. This service interval runs about 60,000 km beyond the factory recommendation, and it can extend the transmission life to around 250,000 km. After this point, scheduled repairs will be needed, and some components may require replacement.

Volkswagen Tiguan
Following the 09G automatic transmission, Volkswagen introduced an improved six speed 09M. The new unit proved highly reliable and began to be used in four wheel drive models with engines up to 3.5 liters. Despite numerous markings and variations, this transmission was developed by Volkswagen with Aisin TF-62SN from Japan under a common project.
The theoretical endurance of the 09M was around 200 thousand km. Owner reports often exceed 230,000 km, with only minor issues. It is feasible for the transmission to reach 300 to 400 thousand km in typical use, though reliability tends to be better outside dense urban driving.
A weak point of the 09M is the heat exchanger. If wear emerges in transmission components, the cooling cells can clog. When repair is required, replacing the heat exchanger with an external radiator is recommended. High quality transmission oil should be used without compromise.

Hyundai Crete
Since 2009, Hyundai Creta models with 2 liter engines have been equipped with six speed transmissions A6MF1 and A6LF1.
Between 2011 and 2012 these units were updated to address failure modes, with a simple design that aids ease of repair. The declared endurance for the A6MF1 and A6LF1 was 180,000 km, yet in practice many cars achieved around 300,000 km. This improved reliability aided the rising popularity of Korean vehicles.
The A8LR1 and A8TR1 eight speed automatic options also deliver strong performance.

Has the reliability gone?
Older models from the early 2000s carry some of the most durable automatics ever built. The famous 772.4 Mercedes unit is renowned for its longevity, and the Ford 4F27E could be repaired without removing the transmission. Toyota’s A340 and Jim’s 5L40E are also noted for solid reliability.
In modern cars, four speed automatics have largely faded from use. A practical expectation today is 180 to 200 thousand kilometers before a major service might be needed. If a box lasts longer, that is a sign of a well balanced, durable design.
