In August, the Niva family emerged as the best-selling SUV in the Russian automotive market, a fact reflected in the latest data from the AEB on new passenger car sales for the peak of summer. It’s important to note that AvtoVAZ treats the Niva lineup as a single family comprising two distinct models—Niva Legend and Niva Travel—and both contribute to the brand’s overall performance in the statistics.

The two Niva models resumed production in the summer of 2022 and together posted a total output of 2,327 units. That figure marks a decline of 1,111 units from August of the previous year, yet the drop is not as severe as in some neighboring segments, suggesting relative resilience in this part of the market.

Meanwhile, competing models—Haval Jolion and Geely Coolray—have continued to gain traction over the past year, ranking second and third. Dealers moved 1,921 Jolions (+1,227) and 1,035 Geelys (+275) in August alone. The top five of the SUV segment is completed by Hyundai Creta, which sold 796 units, a substantial drop of 4,706 year over year, and Kia Seltos with 688 buyers, down 670 from the year prior.

Rounding out the top ten are the UAZ Patriot, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Geely Atlas Pro, and Hyundai Santa Fe. With the exception of Geely, which did not re-enter the market last year, all models in August 2022 experienced noticeably weaker demand compared with the previous year, underscoring the broader timing effects and shifting preferences within the region.

  • The Niva’s popularity even drew attention outside Russia, where it earned recognition for reliability in global rankings, illustrating how a regional model can resonate with international audiences.
  • Additionally, the brand’s media presence expanded as Driving’s latest episode became available for streaming on RuTube, broadening reach among enthusiasts.
