New proposals aim to curb drunk driving and tighten licenses
Statistics from traffic authorities show that roughly one in ten road crashes in the country involves a driver under the influence. This figure underscores the call from lawmakers for stricter penalties and preventive measures against drink driving. The national parliament, known as the Duma, is currently debating a package of legislative changes that would reshape how intoxicated drivers are treated under the law.
Key elements of the proposed reforms include a rule that would bar anyone caught drink-driving from taking driving entitlement examinations until the suspension period has ended. This applies not only to licensed adults but also to minors who have not yet earned a driver’s license but who have been found operating a vehicle under the influence. The intent is to close loopholes that allow individuals to pursue licenses while penalties for DUI are still active.
Another facet of the plan would block individuals who have had driving rights withdrawn by court order from engaging in any driving activities for the duration of the withdrawal period. The goal is to prevent a repeat cycle of offenses during periods of court-imposed sanctions and to reinforce accountability for road safety violations.
Public support drives a tire donation effort
In a related effort, the campaign called “Behind the Wheel,” in collaboration with the Popular Front, has launched a fundraising drive. The money raised will be used to purchase tires for public-service vehicles used by the People’s Police and operational services in the LPR and DPR, including ambulances, emergency response units, and humanitarian aid convoys headed to Donbass, as well as military equipment supply vehicles. Citizens can contribute through a dedicated collection page to help ensure that essential vehicles remain roadworthy and ready to respond when needed.
Officials note that keeping these vehicles equipped with reliable tires is a crucial component of maintaining public order and delivering timely medical care and humanitarian assistance. The initiative emphasizes the practical link between road safety adherence, disciplined vehicle operation, and the ability of emergency responders to reach those in need swiftly.
