Moscow Airport Traffic Surges Through July

Three Moscow airports Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo moved 1.3 million more passengers in July than in the first month of this summer, a 21 percent rise. Domestic travel grew by 1 million passengers, a 22 percent jump, while international traffic increased by 300 thousand, about 19 percent higher.

Overall passenger flow is close to July 2021 levels and is at 95 percent of last year. Compared with pre Covid figures, air passenger numbers stand at 68 percent of the July 2019 level.

In Russia, the routes most common from these three airports go to:

  • Sochi
  • St. Petersburg
  • Kaliningrad

Among international destinations, travelers most often head to:

  • Antalya, Turkey
  • Istanbul, Turkey
  • Yerevan, Armenia

Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow and head of the city department overseeing transport and road infrastructure, commented on the trend:

Moscow is in peak holiday mode. Passenger numbers at the city’s airports show a sustained upturn. People are traveling more, both within Russia and abroad. This gains support from swift government actions to back air fleets and airport operations. The city recognizes Aeroflot for its prompt and reliable service. In July, traffic at Moscow airports nearly matched 2021 levels and rose to 68 percent of the 2019 pre pandemic level, indicating a strong recovery in travel demand.
