LG Display has created ultra-thin speakers that can be mounted almost anywhere inside a car, including the ceiling and even the headrests.
These Exciter panels measure 2.54 mm in thickness. The technology, named the Thin Actuator Sound Solution, is set to replace traditional car speakers in 2023.
There are no conventional coils, diaphragms, or magnets in the system. Instead, a film-based approach is used. Engineers say the film transfers vibrations to the surfaces it attaches to, delivering a rich three dimensional sound experience that enhances immersion.
Because the panels are compact in size (15 by 9 by 0.25 centimeters) and weigh only 40 grams, they can be concealed within most vehicle interiors: in the dashboard, the headliner, pillars, and headrests. LG states this design frees up space without compromising sound quality.
LG plans to demonstrate the technology at CES 2023, the International Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, United States, from January 5 to 8, 2023.
