Turning Around at a Busy Intersection: What Drivers Need to Know

Here is a real world scenario to consider: an SUV driver attempts to reverse directions by turning around at an intersection. The central question is how to perform this maneuver without violating traffic rules. Is a U-turn permitted at this spot, and if so, which route should be chosen?

To avoid breaking the rules, attention must be paid to the delineation on the road. Marking 1.1 is placed where traffic streams divide and where lane boundaries in dangerous road sections are defined. It also marks the edges of the carriageway where entry is prohibited and the boundaries of parking spaces for vehicles. Compliance with this marking is essential for safe and legal driving.

The numbering of these markings aligns with GOST R 51256–2011. Crossing them is forbidden in normal driving conditions.

Put simply, marker 1.1 separates opposing traffic flows. Standing to the left of it implies entering the oncoming lane when making a turn.

In the depicted situation, traveling along route A places the off-road rider into the oncoming lane, which is prohibited at this intersection. This is reinforced by paragraph 9.1(1) of the SDA, which states that on all two-way roads it is forbidden to drive along the carriageway intended for oncoming traffic if it is separated by tram tracks, a dividing strip, markings 1.1, 1.3, or a format 1.11 with a dotted line on the left.

What’s the catch?

Appendix 1 to the SDA notes that a sign prohibiting a left turn does not automatically forbid a left turn. Many drivers focus on the sign and overlook the road markings, which can lead to mistakes at critical moments.

Making a U-turn at this intersection along route A could result in a fine of 5,000 rubles. or, under part 4 of Article 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, a driver’s license could be suspended for a period of 4 to 6 months.

In the illustrated diagram, U-turns are permitted only along Path B. This distinction is important when approaching similar intersections. The instinct to shave off a few meters and save a few seconds can create significant risk, leaving a driver to rely solely on personal judgment.
