Latest Trends in Fuel Prices and Market Reactions
Recent data from Rosstat indicates that the past year saw the smallest rise in fuel prices in two decades, even surpassing the subdued increases experienced during the 2020 pandemic. Retail gasoline prices rose by just 0.9 percent, while diesel fuel climbed 9.1 percent over the year. These figures reflect a market that has enjoyed a relatively calm year for gasoline yet shows stronger upward pressure for diesel, influenced by broader energy and inflation dynamics.
Analysts warn that the near-term outlook could shift. A key factor cited is the European Union’s embargo on imports of Russian oil products, which was set to take effect on February 5. Experts expect this policy to reshape supply and pricing in neighboring regions and potentially beyond, altering the balance in the diesel market domestically.
Kirill Rodionov, an analyst from the Institute for the Development of Fuel and Energy Complex Technologies, notes that the EU embargo may produce a surplus in the domestic diesel market, which could exert downward pressure on prices. Yet he also emphasizes that petrol prices should not be expected to fall in tandem, given the broader factors shaping gasoline markets this year.
From another angle, Dmitry Alexandrov, head of the analytical research department at IVA Partners Investment Company, observes that retail price trends are likely to rise slowly, staying close to or below inflation. He also points out that the combination of export challenges and local supply dynamics could create moments of price softness at gas stations, a pattern seen in earlier periods of market strain.
