The Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, now under AVTOVAZ ownership, might soon bear a new name. Maxim Sokolov, the president of AVTOVAZ, explained that the site could be renamed Lada St. Petersburg. The proposal aims to secure approval not only from AVTOVAZ’s board and executive committees but also from the St. Petersburg city government, in line with local law. Officials have been asked to review and approve the change, and it is hoped for a favorable decision in the near term.
As a note, this report reflects the latest statements from AVTOVAZ leadership and the ongoing corporate reorganizations within the Russian automotive sector. In early February, AVTOVAZ disclosed the acquisition of a 99% stake in the company’s share capital for a nominal price of 1 Euro, with settlement in rubles at the official exchange rate on the payment date. This move marks a significant shift in control and sets the stage for strategic realignment of production and partnerships.
Looking ahead, the St. Petersburg site is planned to host the introduction of at least three new Lada models. Production is slated to commence in the second half of 2023, featuring higher-end offerings in the C and D segments, including sedans and crossovers. The vehicles are expected to be manufactured in cooperation with foreign partners, with Chinese firms identified as a probable component of the supply and manufacturing framework.
